Food and nutrition

Campaigning for fair and balanced regulations for sports foods and supplements is at the heart of what we do.

The EU is home to the world’s most robust rulebook that governs every aspect of our food – what’s in it, how it’s produced, labelled and sold. This helps to keep us safe and healthy.

Sports nutrition products are specially formulated to meet the nutritional needs of athletes, gymgoers, sportspeople and those leading active lifestyles. As a result, these foods and supplements might contain higher levels of certain nutrients, such as protein or carbohydrates.

Therefore, it’s important that regulations on food and nutrition account for these differences and ensure that consumers can meet their goals while remaining safe and informed.

Food Labelling

ESSNA works to ensure that the specific role of sports nutrition products is reflected in legislation, and campaigns for appropriate exemptions from additional food labelling restrictions, specifically related to the introduction of mandatory front-of-pack nutrition labelling (FOPNL) and nutrient profiles. The specificities of sports foods are clearly stated on product labels, and consumers have access to adequate and clear information about their intended use.

Food composition

A key priority for ESSNA is to ensure that legislation continues to allow sports foods to be formulated in a way that allows it to cater for the specific dietary needs of people engaged in exercise.

Food Marketing

ESSNA is actively working to ensure that consumers have access to sports foods.

For instance, we have engaged in discussions around the introduction of marketing and advertising restrictions for products considered high in fat, salt or sugar (HFSS) in the UK, alongside other topics.
