ESSNA adds global certification leader NSF to its growing alliance

The European Specialist Sports Nutrition Alliance (ESSNA) has expanded its membership with the addition of NSF, a global organisation specialising in testing, certification, and standards development for the food, water, and wellness industries.

NSF joins the Alliance as it continues to expand its network across the sports and active nutrition supply chain, strengthening industry collaboration and supporting a robust, science-based regulatory environment in Europe.

With more than 80 years of experience, NSF is an independent human health authority that stands between people and preventable risk through the development of public health standards and the provision of testing, inspection, certification, and advisory services. The organisation serves over 40,000 clients in 110 countries and is a collaborating centre of the World Health Organization on Food Safety and Water Quality.

NSF is a recognised leader in the development of voluntary standards, with more than 160 published standards and protocols created through a public process involving industry, regulators, and public health experts. Its work spans the full supply chain – from agriculture and manufacturing to retail – supporting the safety, quality, and sustainability of food and wellness products.

In the sports nutrition sector, NSF provides science-based certification and consulting services for food supplements and personal care products, helping to support product quality and consumer confidence.

David Clarke, Director of Nutrition and Wellness at NSF, highlighted that joining ESSNA reflects the organisation’s focus on protecting athletes and consumers.

“The sports nutrition industry continues to navigate significant challenges, including contamination risks, increasingly complex supply chains, and evolving regulatory frameworks,” said Clarke. “Our ESSNA membership strengthens NSF’s ability to support manufacturers, brands, and governing sports bodies in protecting the integrity of sports nutrition products across the globe and empowers consumers and athletes to choose products they can trust.”

Luca Bucchini, Chair of European Specialist Sports Nutrition Alliance, welcomed the addition, noting that NSF’s “global expertise in testing, certification, and standards development further strengthens the association” as it works to represent the responsible sports and active nutrition sector across Europe.

In recent months, ESSNA has continued to expand its membership, bringing together organisations from across the sector – from brands and manufacturers to ingredient suppliers and service providers.

Founded in 2003, ESSNA represents the sports and active nutrition sector across the EU and UK, advocating for proportionate, science-based legislation while promoting high standards of safety and quality across the industry.
